SHOULD I DONATE TO Opportunity International Australia?

Opportunity International Australia are a legally registered charity with deductible gift recipient status. They are clear about how they are run, by whom they are run and how they spend their money. Notably, they have a clear conflict of interest policy in place to minimise risks of misuse of funds.

Opportunity International Australia also show they are likely to be effective at improving the lives of their beneficiaries. They highlight their objectives, present results and show that they are active in understanding and improving their social performance (or social impact).

However, we need to see more in order to recommend them with confidence. Opportunity International Australia present the high level objectives of their organisation in their Financial Report, but we were unable to identify a strategy that provides insights as to how they will work to achieve these goals. In addition, while Opportunity International Australia clearly present their results, they do not present any detailed evaluation reports that show how these data are collected. In order to have confidence in the results, we need to see complete reports, including the data collection methodology.

After assessing both their strengths and their weaknesses, our overall recommendation for Opportunity International Australia is neutral. They demonstrate they are trustworthy and probably effective, but we need further assurances before being able to recommend them with confidence.

In order to improve our recommendation, we need to see:

  • a strategy that outlines how they will go about delivering their objective

  • evaluations that provide detail on how the reported results are collected, specifically for programs funded by Opportunity International Australia (as distinct from Opportunity International).
