Why do they exist?

They are “dedicated to caring for the families of veterans who have died or become incapacitated either on service or subsequently.”

Should I donate to Legacy Australia?

Legacy Australia are a legally registered charity with deductible gift recipient status. They broadly describe their mission, highlight the need for their services and describe their activities. They also list the people running the organisation and present a basic level of financial transparency.

However, Legacy Australia need to present additional information for me to recommend donating to them. In order to demonstrate that they are trustworthy, we need to see more on how they are governed and how they manage their finances. They do not present a complete financial report. It is not clear what the skills and experience of the board and executive are, or how their key people are remunerated. In addition, Legacy Australia do not demonstrate basic signs of effectiveness. They do not outline a strategy or the results of their activities, or indicate they are evaluating the quality of their services.

After reviewing Legacy Australia’s published information, we are unable to recommend donating to them. They do not present basic information that shows they are trustworthy or effective. In order to offer even a neutral recommendation, we need to see:

  • a complete financial report;
  • further detail on the how the board and executive are compensated;
  • further information on the policies used to distribute funds across members; and
  • a description of their activities and results of those activities for the latest financial year.
