Who are Oxfam Australia?
Oxfam Australia pursue a vision of "a just world without poverty.”
They deliver immediate aid in emergencies as well long-term solutions that address the root causes of poverty, by working directly with communities and undertaking political advocacy.
Note: Oxfam Australia is an affiliate of Oxfam International, a global confederation of 21 organisations working together with partners and local communities in 79 countries. This assessment is for Oxfam Australia only. Results may or may not be consistent with other organisations within the broader Oxfam confederation.
Why do they exist?
They “envisage a world in which people can influence decisions that affect their lives, enjoy their rights, and assume their responsibilities - world in which everyone is valued and treated equally."
What do they do?
Oxfam Australia deliver programs across the following themes:
The right to be heard: supporting those who’ve been rendered voiceless — including Indigenous communities, women and people with disabilities — to speak up and claim their place at the decision-making table.
Gender justice: working to help give women and girls the same opportunities to learn and earn as men; appointing women to more leadership roles; ending the sexual and physical violence that permeates societies, worldwide; working with men and boys to debunk beliefs and systems that oppress women.
Saving lives now and in the future: helping people prepare for disaster, and calling for action on climate change.
Sustainable food: working with vulnerable communities to develop more sustainable farming techniques that can withstand the pressures of conflict and climate change.
Fair sharing of natural resources: empowering vulnerable communities to know their rights, demand a fair share of resources and develop new ways to protect their environment.
Finance for development: calling upon Government to invest more in foreign aid and urging the private sector to halt business practices that reinforce inequality and exacerbate poverty.
Oxfam Australia worked directly in 29 countries in the 2017/18 financial year.
