Who are the Wilderness Society?
The Wilderness Society is an environmental advocacy organisation that undertakes campaigns to protect wilderness areas and to limit Australia’s contribution to climate change.
Why do they exist?
They want to “protect, promote and restore wilderness and natural processes across Australia for the survival and ongoing evolution of life on Earth.”
They believe that:
- ecosystems and habitats should be "protected for good”, and
- “people and nature rely on a safe climate.”
What do they do?
The Wilderness Society run two major campaigns across organising centres located around the country:
- Nature Campaign: to create protected areas and strong, nationally consistent laws and institutions that protect wilderness and nature across Australia.
- Climate Campaign: to keep fossil fuels in the ground and maximise the amount of carbon stored in natural landscapes.
They also offer members and supporters the opportunity to empower themselves and others through training.
How do they earn their money?
How do they spend their money?
Should I donate to them?
The Wilderness Society is a legally registered charity with deductible gift recipient status. They clearly describe their purpose, strategy, the advocacy programs they are undertaking and the results of their programs. They also clearly describe their executive team, their board and finances. They undertake original research and demonstrate they are leading the sector in forming alliances with like-minded organisations.
However, it is not completely clear they are trustworthy and effective charity. They do not describe how they manage conflicts of interest. It is also not clear how they evaluate their campaigns. Evaluations are necessary in order to demonstrate and improve their performance, and show that money is being used effectively.
After considering both the strengths and weaknesses of The Wilderness Society, our recommendation is neutral. They present basic information that indicates they are probably trustworthy and effective, but we need further assurances before being able to recommend them with confidence. In order to improve my confidence with The Wilderness Society, we would like to see:
- How they avoid conflicts of interest
- Evaluations of their advocacy campaigns.
