Who are Brotherhood of St Laurence?
Brotherhood of St Laurence is an independent organisation dedicated to broad service delivery across the four stages of life. They are asking for your help to pursue their vision of “an Australia free of poverty.”
They are a registered Australian charity. Their ABN is 24603467024.
Why do they exist?
They highlight some of the problems they are trying to address:
44% of people aged over 65 experience exclusion, more than any other age group;
40% of lone parent households experience social exclusion;
early school leavers are 3x more likely to experience exclusion than those with a diploma.
Their mission is to “pursue systemic change to ensure people experiencing, or vulnerable to falling into, deep disadvantage and exclusion, enjoy economic security and social inclusion.”
What are they doing about it?
They deliver 63 programs across the following areas:
getting people into work,
caring for older people,
helping families with early childhood programs,
working with people living with disability and
carrying out research and advocacy to improve the wellbeing of our communities.
The majority of their activities are conducted in metropolitan Melbourne.

Should I donate to Brotherhood of St Laurence?
We believe it is likely that your donation will be used as stated, that is to pursue a vision of “an Australia free of poverty”.
We believe that Brotherhood of St Laurence is trustworthy. They consistently demonstrate that funds are used in pursuit of the mission. Their financial model is clear. They show where donations go. It is clear who is in charge. Roles are described and performance is monitored. Finally, they demonstrate how they prevent the misuse of funds.
We also believe that it is likely that Brotherhood of St Laurence is effective. It is clear what they do and the benefits they deliver. They present strategic objectives. They show the activities and results that they have delivered in the last financial year. They demonstrate a focus on program evaluation.
However, we recommend they address the following in order for us to have confidence that donations are used to deliver high quality outcomes:
clarify how the strategic objectives listed in their 2018 Annual Report support their Strategic Plan 2015-2020,
clarify their general approach to monitoring and evaluating the success of their programs (which programs are evaluated and why?).
Note: Brotherhood of St Laurence have notified us that they are currently undergoing a strategic review which may address these points.
