Who are CARE Australia?
CARE Australia’s mission is to work “around the globe to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice.”
They are a registered Australian charity. Their ABN is 46003380890.
CARE Australia is a member of CARE International, headquartered in Atlanta in the United States. CARE’s network includes 14 federation members working in over 94 countries. This is an evaluation of CARE Australia only; the recommendation may or may not be consistent with other member offices.
Why do they exist?
They highlight the problem they are trying to address:
The majority of the world’s poor - particularly in our Indo-Pacific region - will soon live either in middle income countries or fragile states. At the same time, many of our closest neighbours remain on the list of least developed countries. Inequality between rich and poor is growing, and progress towards equality between women and men has stalled. Left unchecked, climate change will threaten our lives and livelihoods.
CARE Australia have a vision of “a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and all people live with dignity and security.”
What do they do?
They deliver work across the following themes:
empowering women and girls -actively help women to earn more income, prevent violence, get basic services and gain more learning opportunities
lifetime of learning- projects that make education inclusive and easily accessible
emergencies- providing food, shelter, clean water, sanitation facilities, medical care, tools, and seeds to the people who need it most
ending hunger- improving farming practices, linking farmers to markets, helping adaptation to new climates providing lifesaving support in emergencies
healthy lives- working with local communities and focusing on child and maternal health, women’s reproductive health, safe water, and health in emergencies.
advocacy- act as facilitators, communicating the needs of the most marginalised people to policy makers, and supporting local people to do their work.
