Should I donate to Yooralla?

Yooralla are a legally registered charity with deductible gift recipient status. They clearly describe their board, their executive team, are transparent with their finances and describe how they manage conflicts of interest. They describe their mission, the programs they are delivering and their strategic vision. It is also worth noting that they work with universities to better understand the effectiveness of particular disability support services.

However, they present only limited information to show they are effective. It is not clear if Yooralla monitor their performance or if they evaluate the success of their program/service areas. The cost of delivering Yooralla’s various service areas is also not disclosed – this information is necessary for us to understand where program priority areas are.  Finally, while a summary of the strategy has been published, we need further detail to understand how this will be executed (and monitored) to deliver value for Yooralla’s clients.

After assessing both their strengths and weaknesses, our recommendation for Yooralla is neutral. They show they are trustworthy, but only provide limited information to demonstrate their effectiveness.

In order to improve our recommendation for Yooralla, we need to see:

  • how the board/ executives monitor performance;

  • breakdown of expenses across program areas;

  • a description of how the organisation evaluates their programs/services (and copies of evaluations); and

  • more detail on the organisational strategy.

We have investigated the finances, operations and results of Yooralla and present our evaluation in a report that you can download now. This evaluation shows you how your donation is spent, who is running the organisation and whether there are any potential conflicts of interest. It also examines whether the charity can demonstrate that they are delivering meaningful results. Finally, it contains our recommendations for potential donors and the reasoning behind them.
