Who are Animals Australia?
Animals Australia Federation (Animals Australia) are an animal protection organisation. They investigate and expose animal cruelty and conduct public awareness campaigns. Animals Australia also provides campaign advice or representation on animal welfare committees and government advisory groups for around 40 Australian 'Member Society' groups that they represent.
Why do they exist?
Animals Australia have a vision for “a world where all animals are treated with compassion and respect and are free from cruelty.” They believe that “we can create a kinder world for all by fostering respect for animals and that our treatment of animals reflects who we are as individuals and as a society.”
What do they do?
Their work is focused around two strategic areas:
- investigations to expose animal abuse wherever it occurs, and
- public awareness initiatives to empower and inspire the community to adopt cruelty-free lifestyle choices.
Their major campaigns include:
- End factory farming
- Ban live export
- Help save dairy cows and calves from cruelty
- Fight puppy factories/mills
- Promote a vegetarian diet.

Should I donate to Animals Australia?
Animals Australia are a legally registered charity with deductible gift recipient status. They describe their purpose, the advocacy programs they are undertaking and the results of their programs. They show how they work strategically with other organisations to deliver their goals. Notably, they demonstrate they are trustworthy by clearly describing their executive team, their board, finances, and outlining the measures they have in place to minimise risks associated with conflicts of interest.
However, we need to see more on their strategy and how they evaluate their programs before being confident Animals Australia are an effective charity. Animals Australia highlight priority advocacy areas in their Annual Report, but we were unable to identify a strategy that shows the future direction of the charity. We were also unable to find any organisational goals or a description of how they monitor their own performance. In addition, while Animals Australia highlight key results of their programs, they don’t indicate if they are evaluating the effectiveness of their advocacy programs. How has their work influenced the quality of life for those animals they are seeking to protect?
After considering both the strengths and weaknesses of Animals Australia, our recommendation is neutral. They demonstrate that they are trustworthy and present some indicators that they are effective, but we need further assurances before being able to recommend them with confidence. In order to improve our recommendation for Animals Australia, we need to see:
- an organisational strategy;
- a description of how they monitor performance; and
- evaluations of their advocacy programs.
