Who are Landcare Australia?
Landcare is a national resource management program that “aligns the practice of environmental management with land productivity”.
Landcare Australia leads the Landcare movement, which is made up of more than 5,400 local groups across the nation. Landcare Australia promotes Landcare, provides financial support to Landcare groups and devolves governance and management to local communities.
Note: this is an assessment of Landcare Australia Limited only. The results may or may not be consistent with that of the 5,400 Landcare groups that fall under the Landcare brand.
Why do they exist?
Landcare was established as a way for “farmers and environmentalists unite to care for our land and water. Farmers realised it made good business sense, and environmentalists realised they needed to work constructively with farmers, as managers of over half of Australia’s land mass.”
What do they do?
The principal activities of Landcare Australia are:
- Funding Landcare, Junior Landcare and Coastcare awareness and community group projects through partnerships with corporate and government partners, through service delivery in respect of environmental projects and through engaging with the community at large; and
- Building awareness of land and water degradation issues and encouraging broad participation in Landcare, Junior Landcare and Coastcare activities by land managers and the community.

Should I donate to Landcare Australia?
Landcare Australia is a legally registered charity with deductible gift recipient status. They describe their purpose and activities and highlight the results of their work. Landcare Australia demonstrate they are trustworthy. They describe their board and CEO, how they manage conflicts of interests and are also transparent with their finances.
However, Landcare Australia needs to take further steps to demonstrate is an effective charity. They mention features of their strategy in their latest Annual Report, but I was unable to find the complete strategy to review. It is also not clear how they evaluate the effect of their work on the groups they support and the natural environment. Finally, it is not clear how they spend their budget across different program areas, making it difficult to get a sense of where Landcare Australia focuses its attention and if this is consistent with the strategy.
After considering both the strengths and weaknesses of Landcare Australia, our recommendation is neutral. They present basic information that indicates they are trustworthy and probably effective, but we need further assurances before being able to recommend them with confidence.
In order to improve our confidence with Landcare Australia, we would like to see:
- Their latest strategy
- Evaluations of their programs
