Who are Amnesty International Australia?

Amnesty International are “an independent, global movement of people who campaign courageously for human rights.”

Note: Amnesty International Australia are a section of Amnesty International. Amnesty International consists of national branches (sections and structures), international networks, affiliated groups and international members. Amnesty International's International Secretariat is based in London; it is responsible for the majority of the organisation's research and leads campaigning work. This is an evaluation of Amnesty International Australia only.

Why do they exist?

They state, “Human rights are the basic freedoms and protections that belong to every single one of us – but are violated every single day.” They believe “that together, we can create a world where our most basic human rights are enjoyed by all.”

What do they do?

Amnesty International undertake research to identify opportunities to achieve human rights impact and build campaigns. They use those campaigns to empower activists, reach out to new audiences, recruit new supporters and achieve the required pressure that results in positive change.

The current Australian campaigns include:

  • Indigenous justice: call for government to support more Indigenous-led solutions for kids and change laws for a fairer youth justice system.
  • LGBTQI+ rights: campaign for sexuality and gender rights, including working in partnership with groups campaigning for marriage equality.
  • Refugees: encourage governments to do more, by humanely hosting more refugees, providing legal and safe routes for travel and admission, increasing resettlement places or fulfilling funding appeals.

Amnesty International’s global campaigns work across the following areas: refugees, crisis response, individuals at risk, the death penalty and Syrian safety.

Should I donate to Amnesty International Australia?

Amnesty International Australia are a legally registered charity with deductible gift recipient status. They are clear about who is running and overseeing the organisation and how they manage conflicts of interest. They also provide the information needed to understand their financial situation. Finally, Amnesty International Australia demonstrate signs of effectiveness: they describe in depth what they are doing and why, they are clear about their results and how they are tracking towards certain key performance indicators (KPIs) and they also present original research into issues facing human rights in the region.

However, they need to provide more information on how they are evaluating their campaigns and the cost of their campaigns before we have complete confidence they are a trustworthy and effective charity. Despite Amnesty International having published a number of case studies that demonstrate how they undertake campaign evaluations, we were unable to identify any evaluations of Amnesty International Australia’s campaigns for consideration in this assessment. In addition, it is unclear how much money is directed to each campaign area, making it difficult to know what Amnesty International Australia’s genuine priorities are.

Considering both the strengths and weaknesses of Amnesty International Australia, our recommendation is neutral. They present basic information that indicates they are probably trustworthy and effective, but we need further assurances before recommending them with confidence.

In order to improve our confidence in Amnesty International Australia, we would like to see:

  • a breakdown of spending across campaign areas; and
  • evaluations of their advocacy programs.
