Who are National Breast Cancer Foundation?
National Breast Cancer Foundation is a national body that funds “breast cancer research with money raised entirely by the Australian public."
Why do they exist?
They state: “breast cancer is the most common cancer facing Australian women, with eight women dying from the disease each day… Research is the only way to prevent deaths, and improve how breast cancer is diagnosed, managed and treated.” National Breast Cancer Foundation is working towards a goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.
What do they do?
ational Breast Cancer Foundation fund research to better understand how breast cancer originates, grows and spreads, in order to develop new tests, treatments and interventions to improve outcomes for people with the disease.[iii] Grant applications are awarded based on scientific excellence, researcher track record and priority areas that support their goals.
Research grants cover a broad spectrum of breast cancer research, as well as supporting psychosocial research aimed at understanding and improving the quality of life for people after breast cancer treatment, and the quality of life for their family and friends.

Should I donate to National Breast Cancer Foundation?
National Breast Cancer Foundation are a legally registered charity with deductible gift recipient status. They clearly describe how they are managed, their board, their executive team, and they are transparent with their finances. They display various indicators of effectiveness. They describe their purpose, present a clear strategy, list the research programs they are funding and describe some of the results of this research. Notably, they show how they work with like-minded organisations to deliver their mission.
However, we would need to see more on how they evaluate their research strategy and how they allocate funds to different research areas before having complete confidence in National Breast Cancer Foundation. It is clear National Breast Cancer Foundation think about evaluations. We note they commissioned an independent evaluation of their research outcomes back in 2013. We also note that they are currently implementing a research evaluation tool called ResourceFish. However, in order to confidently report them as an organsation that understands the effectiveness of its research and works to improve its effectiveness, we need to be able to see evidence of recent evaluations.
After assessing both their strengths and weaknesses, our overall recommendation for National Breast Cancer Foundation is neutral. They demonstrate they are probably trustworthy and effective, but we need further assurances before being able to recommend them with confidence. In order to improve our recommendation we need to see:
- recent evaluations of the effectiveness of their research; and
- a breakdown of how funds are distributed across research areas/themes.
